Hi, has anyone got the lucas part number and a good picture of the correct starter solenoid for a 59/60 Power Major, and also a 63 super major if different.
These always seem to have been swapped over the years and there are lots of variants.
Being a stickler for originality I would like to track down and fit the correct items.
Any info/help appreciated
Regards
ed

Ed,

Don't know the Lucas number, but this type will fit the power major.

Henk has shown the correct one but watch out. There are two solenoids that look the same. One is for cars and the other for tractors etc. The Heavy Duty one will normally have an earth terminal fitted to the other end of the coil rather than earthing through the case.

I learnt the hard way and burnt out quite a few of the car type before complaining to Lucas. I then fitted the HD one to all my tractors that require it and have not had a single failure since. That is a good seven or eight years ago now.

Roadless63,

The Lucas numbers for your solenoid are -
Part No. 76411. Model No. ST950.

Does the correct solenoid alter if tractor is converted from lever start to ignition start?

What is correct part number for ignition start?

Here is a web site to parts that fit the New Majors. http://www.agrilineproducts.ie/partscat ... major.html

My Power is fitted with a 5063 switch and 5191 rubber boot on the starter, and a 5171 Solenoid that mounts near the air cleaner. It is a lever start and It was equiped originally this way.

Part number 5740 looks like the type that would work with a push button, or aftermarket key switch with a start position. Correct me if I am wrong, But this switch was primarily used on the later Supers??? Or were some tractors shipped either way? Or is this an aftermarket switch that does away with the two switches on the lever start tractors? Dandy Dave!

I picked up one from our local farm supply store for $30. Looks like the original and works like a charm. Fortunately they happened to have one in stock. It's not a Lucas, but it's a dead ringer for OEM.
