Starter pinion

Post by Kiwi Kev »

I recently swapped my 2 starters from engine to engine, only to find that 1 pinion had 10 teeth, and the other had 11. They both work fine in each engine, but not in the other engine.
I presume the ring gears will be different also.

Anybody come across this before.

One of my engines is a 63 industrial engine running a 57 starter(lever operated), and the other a 66 engine running a Lucas soleniod type starter.

I also have some of those full electric (sel) starters. 2 of them just alike. One with 10 tooth and one with 11 teeth. One came from an old Ford truck (SMD FL) with a 4 speed, the other from a Clark Forklift (SMD FL) with an auto trans. Its been so long ago I dont remember which is which. But I suspect the 10 T came from the auto trans. But its just a guess. I have 2 other Industrial (SMD FL) engines with (SEL) starters that I havent removed yet. One engine has a tractor oil pan the other has an automotive pan. They both have clutches for a standard trans. All 4 starters I have look the same.
