starting problems

last week i wanted to start the engin after a long winter period.
Battery full loaded but the starter engine refused to turn around. I always hear "click" . So i made a direct connection from the battery to the starter engine. after a few turns not enough power to turn the engine around. With help of a second person I opened the lever for the valves and everything turned nice around , some black smoke but still no ignition.
I know it isn't good but the last hope was some ether in the air inlet and the engine switched on.
how can i avoid the problem in the future, because for the moment i need two persons to start the engine.

sounds like the battery has died. i have found with batteries used on electric fences they appear to be fully charged but when used to start something they die quickly. try a jump start, if things improve you need a new battery.

and double check connections. lose battery terminals will reduce current flow. anywhere along the wiring that gets hot or warm has high resistance. that will help locate the problem.
