I have a pair of front weights to fit my super major and wondered if anyone knew whether they would be fitted with bolts or with studs and nuts

They were fitted on studs. You may have a bit of a problem holding up the weights and starting a bolt.

If you have the original front weights, you have something special in your hands! They are quite rare, I believe.

I did not know there are two versions.
What are the differences?
Pictures of both versions would be great!

early type is flat rectangular slab, super major is not flat, the ends slope backwards. 1000'nd series is totally different, bolt holes are also different and no hole for starting handle.
I think majors had bolts for the weights (up to 3 weights recommended) and 1000'nd series uses studs, probably because as Brian points out using bolts is not easy for fitting them. 1000'nd series machines seem to have up to 6 weights fitted.

Just made a bit of a discovery today, picked up a set of 3 front weights which were bolted together, rather than 1 long continuous bolt or stud they were bolted onto each other individually as per rear wheel weights. The back of the weights have a square recess to locate square headed bolts. never really paid much attention before but looks like this could be the correct method of attachment?

Having spent a long time looking for front weights for my 1953 FMD
with a starter handle (as I am a bit bored of doing wheelies!) I saw this weight on e-bay:

Early Roadless tractor front weight. ford. ploughmaster
item number: 120577929924

It has a hole for a starter handle. Does anyone know if this would
fit? I have started saving scrap lead to make my own if I cant find any!

Without measuring hole centres its hard to say, most of these are suitable for the 1000'nd series fords which have a different hole spacing to the majors. Usually they do not have a starting handle hole which means this one might be suitable for a major tombstone.

is the geometry of the 1000 series the same and is only the hole pattern different or does the 1000 series front weight does not fit at all at the major front end?
I saw a set of 1000 series front weights which I would like to make them fit.

The 1000-weights have wider wholes than the wholes in the Major tombstone.
