Well I pulled my engine, pulled the cam shaft and the 2 piece thrust washer turned out to be a 5 pc. I couldn't find a part number in my manuals. I am a machinist by trade and can make one easy enough. My question is, what type of material and what hardness to bring it to? Has any one made one or had one made?
Thank you for everyone for all the help I have been getting.
It is definately saving me alot of headaches.
I will work on posting some pics this weekend.

Thrust bearing question.

Hi Tom, sorry for not getting back to you before, been busy.
I would have to believe the thrust washers were made from mild carbon steel. The fact that they are thrust bearings and that they broke into several pieces makes one think that Ford gave them a case hardening after they were machined. Take a file to one of the old pieces, this should give you a good idea how much if any hardening they got.
Also be sure it’s actually the older style two piece and not the newer one piece horse shoe style.

It is a 2 piece with the split being offset 1/8" off center in either direction (if that makes since) with a dowel pressed into one half. I'm going to have it rockwell tested tommorow.
I was on Timkens site, they were describing some thrust bearings they sell with a hardness of 60 to 61 Rc. and made from a type of high speed steel. Seems like overkill but once it glassed up I can't imagine it would ever gall. What do you think?
I have always been told as long as the two materials that are contacting one another are different materials and slightly different hardness they will not gall.
Also, I think I will start a new thread for the entire rebuild. Maybe I can save a few threads and keep alot of info in one place.
Thanks!
