Problems with the County

Post by BearCreek Majors »

My baby broke!
Last weekend we took the Selene and the County to the Symco Thresheree, we live maybe five miles away, it was a beautiful day so one of the kids and I hopped on the tractors and took off down the road for a nice little ride. As we pulled up to the grounds I slowed down to turn down the road to the display area and I thought I heard a bearing start to squeal, things started to jump and bind, I pushed in the clutch and everything came to a sudden stop, almost in the middle of the intersection. I tried reverse, it popped loose with a grinding crunch, into first, eased out the clutch and it moved a foot or so and bound up again. Back into reverse for maybe ten feet and tried to go forward again. She went but not without complaining. We idled along in low gear a few hundred feet up into the field and parked her in a row of tractors, all the while trying to convince God that I really was a good person and I would never cheat on my taxes again!
It was a long weekend waiting to pick her up with the truck and trailer Sunday afternoon. For some reason I didn’t sleep very good all weekend.
Got her home and jacked up one side, I could turn the back tire by hand, turning the drive shaft and the front tire, and get it to lock up. While holding the back tire locked I was still able to move the front tire back and forth taking up the slack in the gears and joints. This was very good as nothing was bad in the front (County) gears, trying to find these parts in my part of the country would most likely be a waste of time. Next I took the side cover off the pinion shaft gearbox, slid the gear out and found that I could still lock up the rear ax while not driving any of the County parts. This meant the problem was in the Fordson part of the drive train and regardless of how sever it was, the parts could be gotten from a scrap yard. I called it a day and slept much better that night.
Tonight I went back out to the shop, took the lid off the rear and started turning on the axel until it locked up and found the pinion shaft to the rear went tight, this was drastically narrowing down the possibilities. I took the shifter cover off the side of the trany and eventually spotted the top shaft rear bearing seemed to have no cage around the rollers, and finally noticed one roller was spun around sideways. I’ll have to split the girl and pull the trany but I’ll still sleep a lot better tonight.

As bad as it sounds, it's probably a good outcome. Bearings are easy to find. Hopefully thats the only damage.

When the bearing failed in my Major gearbox, it was a fairly easy repair.

Yes I guess you are lucky its the tractor bearing and thats too nice a tractor to have a terminal failure on. :D county parts are hard to find and expensive in north america :( . I have a 954 and the local heroes want me to tractor pull at our local threshermans days. I told them I would if they payed the thousands it would cost to fix it if anything happened to it. They have not said much about it since.

Robert, I agree with you. I've had many guys tell me I should pull my "old girls" but if they break, I'm out a "friend" as well as cash out of pocket. The prize money is generally small and who needs the hassle?

Hi Kim
I guess we are hijacking BCM's topic a bit sorry BCM. In general I don't have a problem pulling my Belarus or any of my other tractors it is good fun, and the parts are available if anything should go wrong I know the value of my county and was lucky to be in a position to buy it. so would not risk her getting seriosly damaged just for fun.

No problems guys, I’ve had the same conversations with friends and family about pulling with the County and my Selene. When pulling a sled the majority of the torque will be on the rear axles, but I just can’t bring myself to taking the chance of wrecking something. I’ve seen some of the thousand series bust the front pinion shaft outer bearing cover and casting, probably had the front tires bouncing/jumping at the time to do that kind of damage.
Not to mention if I brought one of the girls home and wrecked from pulling them my wife “AKA The Boss” would never let me live it down!

I got the back end of the County back together this week with new shaft seals and bearings, and went through and set up the lift hydraulics. Today I started to split her apart to replace the bad bearing in the trany, I kinda forgot just how deep I had to dig to get the bearing and race out, it was a long day!

Good to see you are making progress with her.
Love the photos. It's interesting to see how different she is, and also how much the same your super 4 is compared to our Majors.
Good luck

Looks like quite a bit of work, but you have a smart workshop and frame for splitting her.

Was the bearing the only damage? I guess it could have been worse?

Good now for a few more decades

Thanks guys.
It looks like the bearing is the only thing that is bad, other than a few teeth in the gears that got scufed up a little.
I was suprised to find what was left of the bearing in good shape, I expected to fing the rollers and races pitted from rust but this was not the case, it looks like a retaner falure may have been the culprit. Makes me wunder if it was run low on oil once or maybe the cage was smacked/broken during assembly.

I’ve been busy trying to get my boiler ready to go before the weather gets cold so the County has been sitting in disrepair, my cousin called the other day and needs the splitting stand to do a few clutch jobs so I got back to work on her yesterday.

We took the Granddaughter to the fair, but didn’t find any giant tomatoes. :(

Had the guys at Talon Bearings in Souderton PA find me a NOS bearing for $75.00 & shipping, half the price of a new one.

While I was in there I replaced the output shaft seal as well.

Image

I found if you let the rear hang down and drain for a week or so almost all the crud drains out and the milky sludge dries up.

Image

Found a few more odd things but nothing bad, the lock washer on the input shaft apparently never had a tab bent down to lock the outer nut, everything was still tight and it is locked now.

Looking down through the empty transmission I noticed this chunk of casting gone on the left side where the PTO gearbox bolts on. It looks like it was busted from the bottom up, not sure from what and I didn’t find the parts in the oil.

I got the back half all back together this weekend and spent most of one day steam cleaning. I had actually cleaned her the day before she broke and could not believe how much crud was hidden under the running boards and around the County framework. Ordered a new input shaft seal for the trany before I set the engine back on, probably won’t see that till next week so I’ll be back to work on the boiler for a while.

she looks good with a blast from the cleaner My 954 is like that and when I emigrated to Canada I bought over 3 majors that had 40 years of that crud on. It was not fun trying to clean that off to keep ag Canada happy. The guy started to comment on the odd bits that would not budge, I said dynamite wont shift that and he said no more about it, He Got in his truck and drove off quite happy :) . I guess you had a lucky escape with the repair and it will be nice to see her up and running again. :)

Got back to work on her this weekend while the boys were working on the Rat Bus. Got all the major stuff back on and should have here running in a few days, still have to rebuild the steering box first. Had no choice but to get it together and out of the hoist bay as the wife needs a oil and filter change on her car!
