Just finished restoring a 1960 power major to as new condition, but was a bit puzzled as to what to do with the outside of the pulley wheel. Looking at some resto pics they are painted blue, but should they not be bare metal ?. I would be interested to hear from anyone who knows these things.

The pulley would have been painted when it left the factory new(everything was painted including the exhaust), but with use, the paint would have worn off the pulley.

Personally, I would paint it as it looks better than unpainted. Even if you left it bare metal and clear varnished it, I think it would look better painted. Up to you though.

First I painted mine too but later I thougt its a working tractor so I took al the paint of bare metal with a clear vanish I think its better this way

Please put some pictures on the board, because you have a special one.
The power was only made until 1958, so your is not a power but super or your year is incorrect.
Could you please give us some numbers?

I have a Nov., 1959 Power Major. I believe the Power Major was built until late 1960.

Will try to get some pics linked in asap. I'm sure its a power major though, as the engine number is 1546450 which relates to a power major MKIII march 1960, and the casting codes on the rear gearbox, and top cover read B26D which i think is Feb 1960.
I think the Power Major was made up until Oct 1960 ??.

Power Major .. July/August 1958 to November 1960. Perhaps the shortest run of any Fordson Model until the NP Super Major.

Yes, My Power Major is from January of 1960.

Wecome aboard Matey. Glad to have another FPM on the site. As far as the Belt Pulley goes, Every breed of tractor I have ever worked on originally came with paint on the pulley. After 1/2 an hour of running,the paint was gone. After a few weeks in the rain, rust. Unless it was a laminated paper pulley like on a Farmall. Dandy Dave!

Hi, just a few pics as promised,

This is what she looked like when we got our power major, buried under a sheet with brambles growing up through the bonnet !!


But after lying dormant for 5 years, we jumped a battery straight onto the starter motor, and with the same 5 year old fuel in the tank, she started.
Two years on, this is what she looks like now




Sharp eyed enthusiasts may notice the ill fitting bonnet, courtesy of AGRILINE. This is the second one we got from them, and although the gap down the centerline is not as wide as the first, it is still a poor fit and will not fix properly on the catches. They also supplied us with the first nose cone, which we fortunately checked before painting, and found it to be an inch too short !!! (although perfect looking in every other way ). They were good enough to give us a full refund for this as they had no replacements.
Good replacement bonnets seem to be hard to come by, so would be interested to hear from other peoples experiences !!!.
