Hydraulic Oil Filter
Hydraulic Oil Filter
Where can i find the hydraulic oil filter on a super major?
Hi There are 2 filters on A super major There is a wire gauze on the pump intake that is located under the cast plate where the drain plug for the rear axle is ( under the drawbar) it is held on by 4 bolts. Remember to drain the oil first though. I saw one removed when the guy forgot to drain it ! it was pretty darned funny.
. The other one is a paper element encassed in tin that is inside the rear axle on the return line from the hyd top cover. you have to remove the top to get at it and again it is better to do it with the oil out.
I think your tractor has the wrong hydraulic top cover on it from what I remember of pictures you posted of it a while ago. If this is the case you probably wont have the paper filter under the top cover as the early major only had a single feed pipe from the pump to the top and no return. if the pipe is still there it should not be connected.
Regards Robert

Hi
I went back and looked for your pictures last night. It does have the wrong top cover on it is from an ordinary major from 1952 to around 1960 when the power major finnished . this is when the super first came out. I belive a comment was past about her being a heinz 57 or a bitsa in the other post with pictures
.
I am guessing that she had been modified before you got it and has been wrong for more than 30 years
. you will not need to change that filter under the hyd top as it probably is not in there and if it is it will not be doing anything as there is nothing to connect the pipe to.
. Just wash out the one underneath the drawbar maybe take the top cover off and flush all the old gunk out and refill with fresh oil
.

Hello icom. I believe you need to change the oil. Don't know what you mean by bung but I have a '59 Power Major. There is a drain plug for the transmission and another for the rear end. Refill trans on left side by the clutch and refill rear end below seat on rear. Use same oil for both. Look at Brian's post on correct oil at top of this forum. Good luck.icom102 wrote:the oil in the gearbox and hydraulic oil all the same i can only find one bung on the rear of the tractor what colour should the oil be mines a cream colour bit like baileys cream lol but i betit dont taist as good
