Not far away now!

Post by Nick »

I will get some pictures up later if i work out my new phone, but the liners are in the engine now. So if i can get a good day with it, i reckon it should be first run time soon!
Its got a de-compressor on the rocker, obviously up is no compression and down is full compression, if for some reason when the engine starts it runs away (ive always dreaded this happening) could i just lift the de-compressor to stop it?
Also do you have to start it with it up, get it turning then push it down to start, or just leave it down?
And brian and henk, you were right, it was a brush in the starter motor, where do you get new ones? Its working at the moment but i reckon it needs a new brush.

Using the decompressor when the engine is running will lead to damaged valves and rocker gear. As has been said many times, in different threads, the decompressor is meant to be used to turn the engine by hand. The hand book states this very clearly. Experience makes it even clearer when you are taking the damaged components out of the valve cover. :D

Why would your engine run away? What have you said to it? Its not as if it is a teenager! :D Or have you taken away its X-Box?

The stop control or a rag to put over the air cleaner is all you need. I have seen a Major engine run away, backwards, but that was a 1952 one with the original injection pump, and another that filled the sump with diesel after a fractured leakoff pipe. There was a post on here about a Dexta runaway but that had a pipe from the pressure side of the fuel system into the inlet manifold.

I have overhauled hundreds of Major engines, '000nd series, Perkins engines, 590E and never had one run away yet. (But there is still time). :D

it probably wont run away, but its just a fear i have!
As for the de-cmpressor, i dont really see the point on this engine because there isnt even a ratchet on the front!
Are brushes readily available for the starters?

The decompressor is an over-centre locking device not ratcheted.

no i meant on the front of the engine on the crank pulley, on my major there is a pawl, where the starting handle would have fitted, but on this one its just a large nut

Ah! You mean a starting handle dog!

You could fit one if you could find one. They were there on the whole Major range but not on industrial engines which sometimes had a front drive from the crank.

if i can find one, i will fit one. Just bought some brushes for the starter. Im not sure why, but only one of the brushes is worn down loads more than all the others. I took it out and cleaned it up a bit and it worked, but i reckon it will go again soon.
Im hoping that i can have the pistons in and the sump on by the end of the weekend.
Im so busy with work at the moment Im working all day saturday and sunday mornings, so sunday afternoons are the only chance i have, and of course evenings when the missus is watching the bloody soaps!
