I see there is a gentleman on YT website looking for a block for his power Major, as I was lying in bed this morning it got me thinking about possibly repairing cracked blocks. I have a IH TD9 that were notorious for cracking the heads, I’m sure most of us have seen the creative ways a good shop can weld, pin, screw, etc. these cracks to repair them quite well. (I here Dandy Andy’s machine shop and Creamery does a bang up job). So now I’m wondering if anyone has seen or heard of a good repair job done to the major blocks when they are cracked between the cylinders. On the top side shouldn’t be too bad of a repair but down in the bottom is a whole nother story. My first thought is with this severer of a crack running down the center of the block there may not be enough rigidity left to make a repair viable. I’ve seen a couple of these blocks in the scrap pile and know a guy that has a super block in the shed with the same ailment and starting to think that we should maybe be stashing these in the corner and saving them. At some time a person must face reality that your time and effort are better spent replacing than repairing but depending on what port of the globe you have your roots planted the day may come that finding a good replacement block may be a major undertaking.
Time to go, as I now have all the grandkids (and the wife) running around the house chomping at the bit to open some presents from Saint Nick, and would like to wish everyone a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
