Transmission gear housing problem

Post by datadawg70 »

I cleaned my transmission gear housing the other day and went to put it together today when I noticed a crack between the bearing holes on the backside of the housing. See pictures.

Is this a problem? Can I ignore it or should I try to locate a new housing? The tractor does have a loader and backhoe that I plan using on a regular basis and I want to make the trans isn't going to blow apart on me. Anybody know what caused this? There is no really signs of the bearings slipping int he bores. I'm not sure what the discoloration to the right of the crack is from. It looks like it is from overheating but it think it may just be residue from the parts cleaner.

This housing is for the high and low range gear set? If so, I would say it will not be a problem as the castings around it are beefy enough to hold it together. Being the type of casting that it is, it could have cracked early in life. If it were a hydraulic pump housing, it would leak for sure and need to be replaced. Dandy Dave!

Thanks Dave. It is the upper and lower gear housing and I was thinking the same thing. with the thickness of the casting, and how it sits in the transmission housing, it would be fine. I just want to make sure as I will be using the tractor on almost daily and don't want to have to repair anymore major items anytime soon. I am already on my second engine block (which has two cracks at the fuel lift pump mounting flange) and third crank.
