Replacing air filter

I have bought a new air filter for the oil bath on my major. Ive never changed one before, but thought it would be easy.....wrong again it seems. There wasnt any sign of any air filter gauze inside when i took the oil bath off. I offered the new gauze up and it slid on ok, but the oil bath wont push up enough to get the clamp around.
Am i missing something really obvious here, or am i trying to put it on the wrong way or something? :scratchhead:

Hey Nick, maybe the new one is a little oversized and not allowing it to go together. Is it an original or after market? Does the filter only have the one gauze? For some reason it seems I looked into mine with oil bath and filter off and above was another gauze. Didn't think too much about it at the time but after looking at repair manual there should only be one I think. I guess I need to look again. Good luck.

It really is quite strange gerald. The one ive got is new, but it is too big around to go up inside. I have an ancient one from my other major, and its the same as that, so even the old one wont fit. I have always thought that my major was originally a petrol tvo that had been converted to a diesel because of the truck engine thats in it. Is the air filter on them different?

There were two different companies that made air cleaners for Majors. I think it was AC and Burgess. I don't think that the elements were interchangeable between the two.

ah, now that would make sense. Mine is a burgess, as its written on the side. I must have the one for the AC type then. How do you tell which one is which? because i dont want to buy another one for the same to happen again. Or i could modify the one i have....

Nick,
There were three different elements used in the Air Cleaner on the New Major.

They were as follows:
A.C. Element Part No. E242 CL9.
Burgess Element Part No. E241 CL9.
Burgess Element Part No. E501 CL9.

There were also 4 different Oil Baths to suit the Air Cleaner - 1 x AC and 3 X Burgess.
