FSM timing problem?

Greetings Gents.
A long while back I purchased a FSM running very rough with lots of smoke.
Went through engine doing what it needed. (Rings, main & rod bearings, injectors serviced, replaced 5 bent pushrods, did head/valves and re-set clearences. Put in Exhaust rotator caps. (hadn't any)
Still ran rough and missing.
Took it apart again and checked timing marks inside timing cover. All OK there.
Still rough, thick smoke and missing.
Pump sprays diesel well when a line is loosened.
I'm fairly sure the pump had been changed, and so had the coupler.
Q;
Can the pump be put on 1/4 turn out? tractor is only firing on No's 2 and 4, so it seems.
The bolt is on lower side of the coupler when it's on firing position on #1
What would you chaps do to figure it out?
BTW,
Engine and pump numbers seem like they should work together.
(Engine #; 1590737,
Pump # SPE 4A 70 S296. and stamped below; 5448B )
It came with a lot of bits, and I think someone made two into one. also came with a froze up pump, #SPE 4A 75S 647.
Any help most appreciated!
Richard.

Really stupid question as you've probably already checked, but is the govorner diaphragm ok? The FSM I'm working on at the moment had a very simillar problem and it was a split in the rubber diaphragm.

Hello Paul,
Not a stupid question at all.
I had meant to add I checked the diaphragm, and all was well with it. (Even took it out to look for pin-holes!)
Has me a bit foxed really. I don't know how many times I've checked the rest of the timing, but I don't know wether the pump was put back on correctly before I got the tractor.
I did take the cover plate off the pump and another FSM I have, and when both were on 23 degrees BTDC, the pump pistons were at different stages, so I took off this mis-timed pump, and turned it so it looked the same as the other one.
After that, it would run, but still badly with lots of smoke and missing, and popping in the manifold. twisting the coupler a little on the adjustment slot helped a bit, (Smoke not black anymore) but still not right and missing.
What next?
By the way;
I know I shouldn't remove cover plates, but it seemed like a good idea to compare a running one with this one!
Thanks for your time!!
Richard.

Welcome aboard Richard

.Hopefully you should be able to find a solution for your problem with your Major from a previous post, or from someone from the forum

Hi RH,
Please remember there are no stupid questions...just stupid answers..
I struggled with the timing of my 590e 6 cylinder too. The settings are the same as the 4 cylinder.
Maybe my topic on the "Ford and Fordson Conversions" forum are any help? Check "This and that about 590e"
on the pages 9, 10 and 14.
Good luck!

Thank you for the Welcome and suggestions, Swanndri Guy and Pascal!!
Here is the latest;
Smoky and missing, so I again took cover plates off this pump and one that is running well on another FSM, with both on 23 degree BTDC on #1 cylinder.
I could see this pump was 'late' compared to the other one, so turned the coupler a little on the adjustment slot, and it fired up on four cylinders with no smoke!
It needs some fine tuning yet, as it's not as smooth as my other Super.
At present, it idles too fast. Diaphragm is good, so what do I look at to slow it down?
Throttle -stop adjustment didn't help.
What I don't understand, is if I remove the pre-cleaner and cover most of the air intake with my hand, it idles down just like it should.
Does this mean I have a leak on the intake manifold?...........Or, do I need to adjust the large screw on the governor housing?...(The one below the vaccum lines)
Thanks so much for all your help!
Richard.

Richard,
Work down the line.
Start with the adjustment screw on the outlet. You should be able to turn it so far back that the butterfly inside the outlet is almost close.
If that is not the problem, see if there is any leak on the two vacuum lines. Use a bit of soap on the connectors.
The last option is the screw you were talking about. Be sure you can put it back on the same settings as before you started. Measure the height between the screw and the nut and mark the screw with the nut. Then turn both way's and see what happens.

Thank you for the pointers, Henk.
I will go through the points one at a time, and report back.
Spring appears to be coming(Finally!) to Western Canada, so I might not get at it right away, as I have work to do with my 'other' blue tractor......(A Landini!)
Thank you for your time and help!
Richard.
