can any body the correct tyre size on a fordson e1a major as ive just picked up a e1a with a loader for scrap price the tractor runs well but very heavey on the strearing
i have the 4spoke cast iron rims but dont no the tyres i need

did any body go to the blue force launch at harby this year

Hi welcome to the forum . for those wheels ya need 600 x 19 tyres. if you have the loader fitted i would try and get an 8 ply rated tyre as it will last longer but don't go any less than 6 if you cant get 8s .
I would also make sure that all the steering is free and well greased. and that the thrust bearings in the bottom of the kingpins are free and working correctly .
heavy steering can sometimes be caused by wear in the king pins/ bushings and seized bearings . I had a customer complain about this once with a loader . I re built his front axle and he said it steered like a car with over half a ton on the loader and no power steering .

My Power major has 750X16's. Are you sure you don't mean 600X16's instead of 19's ??? I know some of the early 9N Fords used a 19 inch tire that was narrow, but did not think the Fordson Majors used that size. Easy enough to check the rim size, Just measure the rim where the inside tire hight rests. Dandy Dave!

Unless it is an export or maybe an industrial type tractor it will have the 600 x 19 tyre with the 4 spoke cast center like the e27n had as standard I have seen some odd ball cast wheels around in pictures though. The 7.50 x16 you have was an option in the U.K.
From what i can tell 750 x 16 was standard on North American imports as the only ones I have seen on 600 x 19 tires here in Canada are the E27n s in the major range . I believe the power major cast wheel that would of been used on your tractor in the u.k had 3 spokes instead of 4 though. The 8Ns used a 400 x 19 tyre mostly and they are not tall or wide enough for a major cast center . My friend had them on his E27n and it looked wrong.

Dave, over here 6.00x19 6 ply was the standard fitting. Tractors came from the factory fitted with them on heavy cast 4 spoke wheels on FMD's and 3 spoke wheels on Supers. 7.50x16 was an optional extra and cost more. Some of the later NP Supers came with 6.00x19 pressed steel wheels also.

The heavy cast wheels held the front down when using mounted implements but the plate front wheels required wheel weights and front weights when using the TS82 Ransomes reversible ploughs that were designed for the tractors.

Our tractors in Australia did not have spoked wheels they were solid cast wheels with three round holes ( probably to bolt extra wheel weights.

My relollection of the 1955 New Major was that the steering was heavier than the later 58- 63 ones, perhaps the one we owned had siezed steering box?
Another thing that makes a big difference is the tyres and pressures, I find that the original centre rib tyres fitted here in Australia made it much easier to steer than the old worn four wheel drive tyres that a couple of our tractors had.

Does anyone know if some Australian tractors had wider front rims or not, Perhaps the Malcome Moore industrail tractors made here could have?
One last question The cast front wheels on the 4600 Australian tractors had very similar wheels to the last Super Majors, does anyone know if they were wider cast rims?

Our tractors here in Australia generally had 750 x 16 tyres, though I did see a modified new Major recently with a 900 x 16 multi rib tyres on the same solid cast wheels, they were rather constricted in the side wall but they still cleared the steering.

I need a full set of new tyres for my '52 E1A - currently running 11-36 rears and 6.00-19 fronts - all 4ply - question is how much is a full set likely to set me back? Can anyone recommend anywhere in or near Oxfordshire to get them?
