My 1st Major, but what is it?

Hi
Probably the most common question on here, but I would like some advice regarding the model of my super major that i have just bought to restore.
I have done a bit of research already and know that.
the engine is a 63 new performance engine - 08C 967377
Number on axle casing next to left side disc brake - E1ADDN 4025 T2
Number etched on the large gear in rear axle casing is 2C -62-16-8-10
the hydraulics do not work and it looks like it has had a replacement top from another tractor.
bonnet also looks like it has come off a different tractor.
I was given a replacement pump when I bought it but before I fix it i would like to know if it is a new performance tractor or an older super major with a NP engine fitted.
any advice by someone in the know would be much appreciated.
thanks in advance

Hi welcome to this board.
Congratulations with your first Major.
The colourscheme on thefront half of your tractor looks like the first Supers..just likethe front rims.
The colourscheme of the rear is NP. The rear wheel rims are New Major though.
The liftcover is Super, but the rods that coonect the liftcover with the lift arms are New Major.
The engine looks like NP to me. Just behind the gear selector on the clutch side, is a small triangle. Are there numbers on it? 3.3 is old Super, 4.4 isNP..
Hydraulics are Super, both old and NP.
Enjoy the restauration!

Welcome Aboard Matey!

Looks like the engine is a NP engine as it has an FL head. The engine serial would conferm it. It is on the block in your photo of the head but the injection line is in the way of reading it. It is the raized area that is stamped below injector one. Dandy Dave!

Thanks for the welcome chaps!
the bits like the front grill, mud guards and wheels look like they may have been replaced at a later date??
Serial no for engine is 08C 967377 which i believe confirms it is NP.
Other numbers i have found are:
Gearbox casing B 26 H
Clutch casing H 82 H (not too sure on this one could it be a 0 with a \ throught it?)
Front casing behind axle (under radiator) B 26 H
Lift cover casing J 14 F
So it looks like the Gbox/front casings are from 62 and the lift cover is the wrong one from an earlier tractor?
I believe NP's were introduced in 63, so would they have used the old casings up for a start?
or is it a New Major with an NP engine fitted at a later date?
still confused as to what to restore as?
thanks

hi Pascal
Thanks for replying.
I can't see any numbers on the triangle, but has coincedence has it I was talking to a chap with an NP at a ploughing match yesterday and he was saying that the number denotes if it is a low or high ratio box. he told me they came with 2 boxes after i said mine was very low geared on the road and only did about 12mph.
Is this correct?
thanks
Jon

She is one of the last Orange Wheeled Supers. Your casting codes are from 1961/62. Orange Wheeled Supers went up to July 1963 so your engine number is in the correct sequence. A Minimec pump was installed in the last builds of the earlier Super.
You will not find 3.3 or 4.4 stamped on your tractor, this only denotes the axle ratio on High and Low geared NP Supers. Ford introduced different ratios to cope with the in-balance of forward speed and PTO speed.
You do not have a "Double Acting" Draft control and you have the old style Pressure Relief Valve, neither do you have a drop restrictor on the lift.
So she is either one of the earlier tractors or a Fordson ASP

Hello,
I have an Australian Super Major with a Jan 1961? block date ( A 27 F ) this makes it similar to your model, but you would need to get a parts book to work out things like which hydraulic top it came with? ( I could look it up )
My red wheel Super Major has the same looking front casting as yours but has the earlier radiator and the same hydraulic top as fitted to yours.
I have had to resort to the parts book to figure mine out too, to start with I thought all Super Majors were the same, but there is at least three variations depending which hydraulic top, radiator, ratio PTO and which Injection pump they had.
Just remenbered your block will be later than mine too, as the blocks were changed from Feb 1961 from memory.
There are some other differences too like the bonnet emblems being different between early Super and late, but these are the main differences I have found so far.
