Water pump/generator v-belt

Post by kiwimc »

Gdday all from NZ. I have a pair of majors with serial no.s 1245856 (12/52, Condie) and 1300514 (6/54), and a parts tractor also 6/54. Working on the early one I notice it has a narrow (1/2") v-belt and replacement (car type) generator with ~11 cm pulley. Water pump is also ~11 cm and main pulley ~18 cm. I wanted to put overhauled spare generator on to it but it is the wide (22 mm), standard??? v-belt. The two 6/54 tractors both have wide belts and big pulleys (~14/14/23 cm). Has someone gone to the trouble of swapping main and water pump pulleys to match a second-hand car generator, surely not?

Welcome to the board, if it is a 1952 tractor it should have a wide pulley on dynamo and water pump to match the crankshaft pulley.

Pulley size changed around September 1954. Around the same time the pulley boss was changed as the crankshaft was "stepped" where the pulley fits and also the seal size changed. So its not just a case of fitting a narrow crankshaft pulley to match the other two. You need to get the wide pulleys for dynamo and water pump.

The wide pulley will still fit your dynamo, this remained the same throughout production.

Hi Swanndri Guy. I'm down in Dunedin. Not sure if I'll get to play with them this long weekend...

Hi Brian, following on from your reply. My impression of front main pulley is that its a pain in the a to change. Also if I interpret your reply correctly the narrow pulley is specific to the stepped crankshaft. Does the narrow front pulley therefore suggest the whole engine (or crankshaft?) have been changed in the 12/52 tractor? Can I put the narrow generator pulley on in place of the wide one on the earlier generator, or is there an alignment issue? Cheers

Sorry, I read it the wrong way round, you have the narrow pulley on the crankshaft.

Yes you can fit the narrow pulleys on both dynamo and water pump with no problem. Looks like your engine could have had a new crank or, as you say, a later engine has been fitted.

Check if you have the engine number stamped under No.1 injector or on the block behind the starter motor.
