fordson major with cooks winch

Hello all
I'm new to this forum,but i was hoping someone could help shed some light on what we've just bought? I know its a Major, but not sure what type. Its got no cross shaft on the top cover, i'm not even sure if the top cover is a ford one, as the gears do not correspond with whats cast on the top cover. It would be nice to know if it started life as a winch tractor, or whether its been converted later it its life.
It was first registered on 3 January 1953. The general condition of the tractor, ie wear on pedals/foot plates, wear on steering wheel , tightness of front axel, steering track rod ends, gear box, etc would suggest it has done very few hours work. The rear tyres are Dunlop field masters, judging by the perished state of them it looks possible that they could be original as well. The serial number on engine block is 502E 60 188 . I am going to try to attach some photos of it, but i'm not very good at this sort of thing. If it doesnt work, I might need some guidance!
It would be lovely to find out what we have actually got!

Welcome to this board. A picture is needed to give some answers. The number on the engine is not the normal Major number. This can be found at the right side under cylinder one on a square peace. It should start with 124 until 127 to be a 53 model.
Load your pictures somewhere on the internet run by a supplier. Give it a medium size
Copy the properties and paste them between tags as start (img) and end (/img). Use [] these hooks instead of () these.
Give it a go and we will help you.

Just tried to make the pictures visible but I failed! I think imageshack may be having problems. Anyone else?

You have used the internet adress of the browser. You should use the properties . Rightclick on the picture and look for them. Just put the tack on front and end of every picture.

Looks a normal New Major to me. And even the cover of the rear end look ok.
Some casting codes and engine number is needed.

Here is a link to the Wiki article on identifying your Major. It looks like a Fordson Major Diesel without a lift, lifts were an extra in 1953 so there were some out there without them fitted. It could be an industrial spec as Dave says, if so the brakes will be on the axle shafts not on the bull pinions and you could have just one brake pedal.

Hello all,
Sorry that i havent replyed to you for so long,we've been a bit busy making cider.Now that it's all finally finnished(for this year anyway)i've got a bit more time!
The original VIN no. on the regestration cert is 1238209, which i think, may make it a petrol/TVO.It does have the starting instructions for PVO engines on a plate infront of the battery tray.It also has the shutters infront of the radiator.The VIN/engine no.(on flat by no.1 cylinder) on tractor now, is 502E 60 188.I wonder if this could have been a factory/dealer replacement engine,as the PVO engined tractors do not seem to have been very popular,especially once the diesel engined majors became more numerous.I would really appreciate any thoughts that any of you may have on this.

You could be right about the TVO engine being removed which is a great pity.
She is a September 1952, a sister to my Henrietta who was built at the begining of the month, whilst yours was mid to end of month.
I would suspect the engine is a much later addition. The change over on this side of the country was to fit a Perkins L4 instead of the TVO motor, the DDN engine was not really available until the late 1950's when tractors started to be broken up. It could be a lorry engine, does the throttle go through the block or round the back?

Going on the serial number of your engine it sounds like you have a Thames trader engine also known as an industrial engine if you search this forum under industrial engines you will find the numbers
