Industrial Fordson Major

Hi Everyone,

I am a new member to this forum so I thought I should introduce the tractor I have.

It is an industrial type major as the previous owner told me! I'm not 100% sure what type it is. My two sons purchased the Major for my birthday about 2 months ago as an unfinished project. The previous owner had it sitting in his shed for about 10 years! After buying it from a friend’s family who sadly died before completing the full re-build. He told me that Lincolnshire council previously owned it. They had a forklift attachment on the back. So I should think it has been going backwards all its life.

When it first arrived it had not got any linkage on the back and wasn't running or wired up. My son's hadn't even seen it running so was a big risk!!! Thankfully after wiring and other jobs that needed doing it fired up instantly hardly smoking and sounding great! The guy who rebuilt it has done a very good job. I'm just finishing off his good work!!

I have been sourcing all the rear linkage parts so that I can use it for topping and towing small trailers. It is still used weekly so it is still a working tractor. It still needs the bonnet and cowl finishing off.

I think it is 1954 Major
Engine number: 1754030/40
Cast code on gearbox HL4V
Front axle 14H4
Hydraulics E1ADKN

Any info about it would be much appreciated.

hi steve shes looking good, i was wondering where you sourced your droparm and leveling box for 3pt linkage, and at what sort of price.

I have bought many of the parts through ebay as its the only place original parts come up for sale. The 3 point linkage came from a guy in Liverpool, I think i paid £150 for the draw arms, levelingbox and droparm, It has taken me a few months to find all the parts for the rear. I'm glad I have finally finished the linkage! My topper works well on the back.

The casting codes give 1954 June and September but the engine/serial number is not correct. No Majors had a number that high.

It should be stamped on the flange behind the starter and should be from 129**** to 131****.

The E1A number is a mould code and is the same on all Majors of that era.

Nice looking tractor!

Just spotted she has been fitted with either a new block from 1963 or a Super Major engine.

Hi Welcome to the fordson nut house thats a nice looking tractor.
I was looking at the picture of the motor. Why do you have a plastic bag cable tied over the breather that looks like it is full of oil.
If she is pushing that much oil out of the breather i think you may have a problem in the motor like the rings are bad/ not bedded in properly. or the oil slinger/ breather ristrictor ( not sure of fords proper name of it) on the pump drive gear is broken or missing.
Just thought I would ask as nobody else has made comment.

Probably because the engine is an ASP

The breather lets air in as the air is drawn out by the aircleaner. There is no pipe on the rocker cover because it is the old style FMD one with only a small breather to the manifold.

The engine will be building up a positive pressure in the crank case and sump and the way out is via that breather that was not there on the FMD. Oil will be blowing out with the exhausting air and, if other parts inside the engine are FMD, there will be no oil slinger to keep oil away from the outlet.

Thanks o great one. yes I guess if its a bitsa that would probably do it. I guess really something should be done with it as that bag over the breather spoils the tractor and without it it will stuff the paint. Its a bit of a catch 22 situation.
