Diesel pump replacement

Post by Nick »

Morning everyone, i have an engine here with no fuel pump (due to it being cracked and beyond repair), it is a minimec pump on a new performance engine, with 'FL' on the head. Im finding it hard to get a replacement pump, but am i right in thinking that the earlier pumps will fit as long as you adjust the timing?
Any help would be greatly appreciated :D

The earlier pump will fit but you would need a new intake manifold and governor pipes. It would be a bit of a waste really. I would keep looking for a Minimec, they are out there both new and second hand.

Thats a good point you make there brian, i hadnt thought about that. I know it seemed a bit of a shame to me aswell, but ive been looking for nearly 3 months now and i really want to get it tested and run in, and then put all the shiny bits back on it! Is there anybody you know who may have one?

Hi matt, i live near Wellington in a small village called nynehead. The part that is cracked looks to me like the whole casing would need replacing, but without taking it apart im not sure.

Well, all i can say is, i must of stepped in something yesterday, because i was working at a small local farm and got onto the subject of fordsons, and the bloke said 'oh, ive got some bits you can have if you want them'. Took a look, and guess what........................a minimec pump was sat there along with a few other bits and pieces that i really need to finish my other major!!! ALL FREE!!!!! So today im sending the pump (which seems to be seized) to a diesel specialist to be completely re-built, so that sorts that out! :D :D :D :D :D

Ive got the diesel pump back, all rebuilt and shiny! I just want to make sure im doing the whole timing thing correctly, i turned the engine until (i think) it was coming up on compression stroke, i.e the inlet valve had opened and closed, then lined up the marks on the flywheel on 23 degrees.
However whats puzzling me is, the timing mark on the coupling is facing the engine so i cant see to line it up, should this be like this, or have i done something wrong?

You need to turn the crank 1 complete revolution back onto the mark, you will now find your pump timing mark is in the correct place. Camshaft & fuel pump only run at 1/2 engine speed.

So let me get this straight, the inlet valve has just closed and the piston is on its way up, this is when i lined the marks up, but instead ive got to turn the engine one whole revolution, and then line the marks up?
Excuse me if i seem thick, ive not got a clue as ive never done this before!

Yes just turn the engine over 1 turn, at the moment you are on No4 TDC.With each 2 turns of the crankshaft the inj pump & camshaft will only revolve 1 turn. That is where the 4 stroke cycle comes from, suck, squeeze, bang, blow. Hope that helps

Forget the valves and make sure the clamp bolt on the coupling is heading to the underside of the drive shaft when the marks on the flywheel line up, then line up your pump coupling marks. That is the easy way without taking the valve cover off.

Dont forget ive got a minimec pump not a normal one, but ive lined the marks up now and got the pump bled. Then of course the battery decided to die, so ive got it charging overnight so im hoping that it will run for the first time in a while tomorrow! Fingers crossed...........

It does not matter what pump you have the position of the clamp bolt is the same. This is how we did it in the dealership when we could not afford to be wrong with a "happy" farmer breathing down your neck. :D

Well it runs! At least now i understand how it all works. Although something isnt right, ( i dont think this is to do with the pump). When either the engine is turning over on the starter or running, there is a loud chuffing noise coming from the inlet manifold, also i can feel air being pushed out of the inlet manifold. AND i think its missfiring. Its not that it has no compression because i changed pistons/rings could it be a leaking valve?

Sure sounds like it’s a valve, check the decompresser to be sure its not holding the valves open, and check the valve lash as well. It is also possible to assemble the rocker and shaft assembly’s wrong, making the decompresser lever work wrong and it will also not lubricate the shaft properly.
