It is part of a hydraulic top link clutch release. As you were (say) ploughing and hit an obstruction, rather than break the plough or pull the tractor over backwards, the top link would sense the load change and disconect the clutch via a linkage.

Quite rare but you need the special hydraulic top link to make it work. Rocking Horse Poo and Hens Teeth spring readily to mind but who knows? :scratchhead:

Does this look like the correct cylinder Brian, I picked these up from two different scrap yards, I still need a few of the linkage pieces that run down and under the floorboards. I didn’t realize there is a spring attached to it till now ether.
Icom, I believe there is one more cylinder sitting in a scrap yard an hour or two from me, (Wisconsin USA) if you’re interested I can inquire on the cost.

This board is amazing!!!!!!! You see one of those links once in a lifetime, working with the tractors over here and now there are dozens around. :D

Yes those are the links and some of the linkage but the linkage down to the clutch pedal is missing, You have not got that as well in the back of your shed have you BCM? :D

The auto clutch release mechanisms must have been fairly common around here, my grandpas first Major had one and I still run across tractors that have a few pieces of the linkage on them. The glaciers left behind a wonderful crop of rocks, stones, and boulders in these parts, along with the fact that we were still clearing virgin land in the 50’s probably made the auto release a great selling point for the Majors.

Icom, I got hold of the scrap yard today, the guy wasn’t sure if he had one , if he does it will be the early style similar to mine. The pic is I presume for the Super Majors as they are a different style again, I have never seen one of these. Regardless the worst part is probably finding al the smaller linkage pieces to make everything work, I have never seen a tractor that all of these parts ether.
