They used to fit a Brockhouse automatic gearbox to Countys for use as aircraft tugs. Gives a more gentle takeup than a clutch and did not pull the front off the aircraft! Wonder if it was for something like that.

Have you put in a bid Henk?

That is a very interesting machine. Definately not a Roadless though. The transfer box looks far more like a Selene conversion to me because of the narrow width of the transfer box. Pat AKA Bear Creek Majors would be able to say for sure. The front axle is also not Roadless. Lucky it is too far away to pick up otherwise I might just be tempted. I don't think you would find too many others in the world.

Regards, Frank.

I’d have to agree with Frank, it looks like a Selene transfer case to me. That had to be an expensive option, it looks like the entire front transmission has been replaced with custom built unit, housing and all.

There is a picture of a County Super Four in one of Stuart Gibbard's books with that same transmission. I will look into it tonight.

A friend of mine has a Major Roadless with a Brockhouse. The gearbox looks similar but not exact like this one.

Looks like a Brockhouse by the side plate where the strainer is located. Not very handy if it goes wrong, parts were unobtainable 30years ago.

Henk,

This what the Brockhouse for the Fordson looked like. They were very expensive, almost half the price of a complete tractor.

There’s one happy guy now in Holland because it is sold.
It isn’t me.

I assume the one on the picture is build only for the Major tractor.

It really does show the significance of the Major that a complete and specific unit was designed for the Major.(At least in terms of the layout and external castings).
I wonder whether or not if the Ford company might have had a large input into the design?

I had read that Ford had a prototype Major fitted with the Solecto Speed transmission. Probably a good thing it dident make it into production as the early Solecto Speeds were riddled with problems.
