E1A drive pulley noise - advice please

Hi All,

A friend of mine bought a '52 E1A major yesterday and whilst playing with his new toy, he decided to engage the belt drive pulley turning the lever 180 degrees from 12 oclock position to 6 oclock from drivers seat and released the clutch - it worked great, then he decided to see if it was a two speed pulley so turned it only 90 degrees or 3 oclock position and lifted the clutch - it made a very loud very nasty metal breaking type of noise, so he turned it back to 12 oclock and it stopped, however, now if he tries to turn it back to full on at 180 degrees it makes the noise again.

Question is has he broken it or is there a simple fix? Any advice appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Dan.

You have to turn it 120 degrees. 90 degrees is the gear half in place. That's wat making the noise.
The high low range is made with the high/low gear lever.

Thanks Henk - makes sense to use the high low gear selector for the two speeds. However, has my friend broken it? Has anyone had trouble with these before? What's his options to stop it making a bad noise?

Dan.

If what Henk is saying is correct (I took my belt pulley off years ago) then the only problem maybe that you are not engaging the drive fully.

Thanks Kiwi Kev - I don't think I described the problem properly - when he turned it 90 degress it didn't engage properly and made a lot of grinding noise, and now since that happened if he tries to turn it all the way (180 degress) as you would normally, then it still makes a grinding noise, he can't get it to run without making a grinding noise - as if the 90 degree test has broken something so it now won't engage no matter how far you round you turn it.

I think he's going to take it apart to see if there's something inside damaged or at least figure out where the grinding noise is coming from.

Regards,
Dan.

I think the gear is damaged. When you lift the tractor up on the belt side you can dismantel the pully easy and chek it out. The lifting is to keep the oil in the gearbox.

Thanks Henk - that's what I feared - will see what the damage is when it's apart.
