what lights on a 1954 e1a fordson major

Post by k morto »

does any one have the correct pics of a 1954 major back end as we are having problumes with what rear light and side lights the tractor should have on it
form 1953 to 54 the lights changed from a single red light to the double wing lights some had both
we have in the work shop a 53 and 54 being done up and are both different
the throtle goes round the block on both tractors but we have a nother 54 with the throtle going through the engine with just a red light at the back

Morto,

The two with the throttle goes round the block are not the original engine. After April 1957 this setup was used.
Can't make out what you mean by the light setup. I thought there was only on model on the rear lights and one on the side lights.
Could you place some pictures?
Kind regards, Henk

Hi are you meaning That some had the red light on each fender facing rear and the clear tear drop on the fender pointing front. and the early ones had just the small red dot with the clear part in bottom for the licence plate light in the trailer plug fitting, bolted slightly to the right side looking from the back of the axle casting and attached to the top cover bolts and tear drops facing front :?: .

My 53 petrol has the single rear red dot and the clear tear drops. Im in Canada but think the U.K spec is the same for this model and age, and its pretty original so could take a picture if it helps :) .

From reading a little in my book it looks like 54 home market has tear drops front and reds on the fender back due to the change in lighting regulations at some point that year, i'm sure it had the red dot licence lamp still on it as well :) .
Do they still have original fenders around as the clue will be does the 54 have the mountings for the lights poking up at the back. None of my later Canadian import ones have it only the red dot and they turned the tear drops round to show white backwards for some reason :?
Hope some this info might be useful :)
Regards Robert

These are the lights on my (third week in September) 1953 Major. I don't know whether they were put on by Fordson, or whether they are an after market item, but I suspect the former, since there is no evidence of a number plate bracket/single rear light ever having been fitted. (see the above post re: change in lighting regulations. I suspect these may have been a temporary measure from the factory until the model change?). There is a photo here http://www.cornishtractorclub.co.uk/r07302.htm of a 1955 Major showing a later arangement which I think is a dual white/red fitted on the top of the wing (alright, fender) where it can be seen from both front and rear.

I have not seen anything like my lights in the UK. Try this US site, http://antiquetractorsrus.com/johndeere ... arts3.html they have some teardrop rear lights which might suit very well with the application of some Empire Blue!.
