Hydraulics

Post by AMynott »

I am planning to remove the front loader from my Power Major. Can some kindly advise me what I should do with the hydraulic pipes that lead to the two rams. V grateful. Adam

How much of the loader are you taking off? Is it a front mount pump? Or running from the tractor hydraulics? Are you taking the loader off forever, or for a repair? Or only for a short time to do another job with the tractor? Dandy Dave!

Dave, Thanks very much for your prompt response. I am removing the loader because I hardly use it and the seals on the two rams are very leaky. The front loader is driven by the main hydraulics and every time I raise or lower anything I am squirting oil all over the place. So I plan to remove the loader, continue to use the tractor and work out how to replace the worn seals. Do you think it's enough to put caps on the end of the two pipes leading to the rams? This is my first time contributing to the site (or should I say 'extracting' from it...I can't see my myself having anything useful to add for a while). I have recently bought a Power Major which starts brilliantly and runs well, but requires a lot of minor work. Thanks again Adam

If it is the Rams that are leaking Why don't you just repack them? A local Hydraulic shop should beable to re-pack them for you, or provide you with the correct new packing if you can get them apart yourself. Some come apart easy, and some come apart hard depending on the manufacture, and how rusted the threads or locking retainers may be. If they come apart easy, they are not that hard to do. Otherwise, capping the lines should be fine. Are they double acting cylinders, or single acting? Clue, Double acting cylinders will have 2 hoses to each cylinder and the loader will have down pressure. Singles will have one hose and rely on the weight of the loader for down pressure. Also, Photos help. Dandy Dave!
