Major compression pressure
What pressure should be expected from a super major when compression tested? I am getting between 230 and 250 psi. I am testing it because my tractor is hard to start and when it does start it is misfiring and white smoking until it warms up, I have tried a different injection pump and different injectors and am now stuck.
Thanks Matt

Re: Major compression pressure
HI, have you checked that the timing gears are lined up correctly, has it been apart and incorrectly assembled? Flywheel timing marks correct? All things which can become incorrectly set if engine been tinkered with. It is unusual for all injectors to give trouble, you would usually hear one causing a misfire which can go away when warmed up. Poor starting usually due to timing issues, even the most worn out engine usually starts straight up. More likely to see a high oil consumption problem if bores worn. One final thing, modern diesel "goes off" quickly nowadays, assume you have fresh fuel and checked all filters are clear, on a super its worth pulling the front cover off the lift pump since these block up with dirt internally over time.
Sorry haven't answered your question but maybe some of the above will be useful anyway!

Sounds a bit like H2O in the fuel.

Re: Major compression pressure
I agree with Roadless63. Sounds like a timing issue. Badly adjusted tappets amount to the same thing - they're the first thing to check. But given the severity of your symptoms, it's unlikely the tappets would be that far out - but you never know.

Re: Major compression pressure
aint that strange, i am having the very issues on a just rebuilt super major. compression at #300 on all 4. lots of white smoke, tractor inside warm shop, after a way to long a time it may start, but then runs good. injectors were just done. am going to try a old style injection pump tomorrow. i also think it is firing to late, but have it timed rite at 23 degrees. if i have any better luck or find the problem will let you know. my old major with the same compression readings starts rite now outside, go figuire?
Re: Major compression pressure
As another web-site states: "The answer is in the Smoke"
White smoke will sting the eyes.
Causes:
Incorrect injection timing.
Low fuel supply to the inj. pump.
Low compressions.
Water in fuel.
Water in cylinders.
Faulty head gasket.

Re: Major compression pressure
White Smoke is unburnt fuel, and sometimes coolant. If it is coolant, or fuel, you can smell either in the exhaust. Sometimes both. I never had a tractor "Pavel" before? Can anyone explain the symptoms
and cures

Aw shucks, DD, in all modesty I cannot admit to the claims on page 1. Any maiden galloping behind this Fordson would soon become a very dusty dusky lassie as we haven't had any rain this year with temps in the 30 to 40s C. [Eat your hearts out you snow bound critters!]
As for pages 2 & 3, well, they are all "lies, damn lies and statistics!" [Mark Twain].

And on returning to "compressions' it appears that DAVE is the person to turn to. Over to you Dandy, whoops! DAVE.
Sorry Matt, but a bit of occasional frivolity eases the puckered brow and the frustration. Hope some of the suggestions prove helpful.

How do you check the compression pressure?
Where do you connect the pressure gauge?

You need to pull the injectors out and put the gage in the injector hole. Dandy Dave!

This is not a hole with threads?
Anyone knows a manufacturer and type?

Re: Major compression pressure
Then you will need the correct adapter. You may need to have one machined if you cannot borrow one. It needs to clamp in just like the injector does with an adapter to hook the gage to. You should beable to rework a junk injector if you have one around. Take all the guts out and be sure you have a decent size hole up though the center. Dandy Dave!
