Replacing Transmission Seals

Post by OakLodge »

I am a newbie at this.
I have a "New Fordson Major Mark 1" November 1954. Tractor Serial Number is: 1318034
Quite a bit of oil is leaking from the rear axle seals. Also have oil leaking between the Gearbox and Rear End. The oil in the transmission is quite milky. it this common?
I am thinking of splitting the tractor, replacing the seals for the main shaft and PTO drive. Then do the Axle seals.
I am wondering if there is anything in particular that I should know before starting. Any particular tools that I need for replacing the seals?
Anything else I should be replacing while I have it in halves and the oil out..
Many thanks for any feedback. Andrew

Welcome Aboard Matey. :D This topic has been discused on here before.

Here is one on the axle seals. http://www.fordsontractorpages.nl/phpbb ... als#p11900

One of the regular chaps on here has drawings for a tool to put in the PTO Seals. I will look for that also and post if I can. Hopfully he will be along shortly if I do not find it. Dandy Dave!

Many thanks for the direction and advice. Just getting set up to do it. think I'll do the brakes at the same time, at least check them. Will see if I can find some details on this. Will get that tool made up for the seals as suggested. don't feel like splitting it twice. Andrew

If possible, I would like to get the parts for the tractor before spliiting it, namely the seals. I wonder if anyone would know part numbers. I was in a bearing place today, Murray Bridge, South Australia, and they wondered if I could get some numbers?
The seals that I am looking for are:
1) The seal on the output shaft of the gearbox, leading to the transmission.
2) And the two seals on the PTO shaft also between the gearbox and transmission.
The main gasket between the two flanges, is there something I could get or would you normally use a gasket making compound?
Many thanks if anyone can help out.
Andrew
