hi all thought i might post this on here my dad has bought a super major a couple of months back and we are now in the middle of restoring it the engine was seized as the person that we bought it from bought it from his friend which said that it just stopped running and seized, so he purchased a new engine from a compressor yesterday and are in the middle of taking the bits off the other engine onto the compressor, the compressor engine is also a new performance type so has a bit more grunt

will post more pictures after more progress is made

E1A DDN 172

E1ADDN 5015 i think
engine number behind pump on the original engine 1 or 7 52251
hope at leas one of them makes sense

well p14D Is December 14th 1960 - so wherever that was cast it was made that day ! so it's an early super !

You ain't got enough numbers in that serial - but that is similar to a 1960 serial ! So all original !! Have another look see of you can make it clearer - ooo nice - get the new performance super dexta !

Sorry - but 1572251 is a 1960 power major ?! So defo re-look at that engine number ! Cold be the difference between a super or a power major you have !

ah it is a super as it has the disk brakes and draft control and it has the super style front tomb stone it might have had a engine replacement at some point in its life

Yeh the bit that goes from the hydraulic top to the bracket on the back of the axel. that's good - your back wheels are wrong though - you need the scallop centres not rounds.

Hi
I see from your pictures that super has the old dead drive gearbox fitted not the usual 2 stage clutch/ gearbox for live PTO, Hyds.
I've seen a few here in Canada that are dead drive supers. but never a regular farm tractor in the U.K, so I wonder what the deal is there. was it in from new or is that a working repair too

.

Hi rob- I think that live drive may have still been an option in 1960 - but seems it was a super I would have said it should have been standard ! But i think it became a standard feature in 61/2 but I'm sure someone Else on here has better history ! Maybe a casting date of the gearbox may be helpful to see if it was original of a replacement - code is around the gearbox filler cap on the left hand side near the pto engagement lever.

I bought a 1961 Super Major to drive a pto driven small bale baler (International 440).
After I had paid for it I found it to be non live drive.
If you can bale an uneven heavy crop of hay with a standard PTO you are, in my opinion, a proper tractor driver.

yeah i think that live drive was an option through the producution of the major up until 1964 but by then the advantages of the live drive was known how can you tell the difference in the gearbox beetween the live drive and non live drive or can you not as maybe someone had changed it to non live drive, dad bought the tractor and gambled if it was or not live drive thank you for your help

Live drive was an option up to '64, you see a few in linconlnshire/cambs quite late but non live since they were mainly ploughing/cultivating I suppose. The super that made around 12k a few years back at cheffins sale was non live drive I seem to recall.
You may need to look at your injection pump on the "new" engine since the governor may be different than that of a tractor one.
Good luck with the rebuild!

the next job was to change the cover over to hold the side rails
just need to change the sump over now and it will be ready to fit

i just hope that the timing is still ok after removing the gears
