Hello All,

I just finished reassembling the governor on a 1957 Major. I put a new diaphragm in and an issue seems to persist that it had previous to installing the new diaphragm. Once I get to about 1/4 throttle, the RPM's climb all on their own. This only seems to happen at an idle. When driving the tractor, it seems to be just fine. It almost resembles a runaway but once I bring the throttle lever back to the idle position it smokes a bit and idles right down. Any thoughts as to what may be occurring?

Check the air lines for a leak. It could be a smale one.

Hi Matt, glad to hear you got the new housing.
I’m with Henk on this one, Surging, a runaway engine, no speed adjustment, are all symptoms of the fuel control rack in the injection pump, be it sticking, surging back and forth, etc. as I’m assuming you replaced the diaphragm and the cover is installed properly, and the fact that your problem still seems to be governor related I would suspect a cracked or loose vac line as well, one trick to find the leak is to squirt a little starter fluid around the fittings and down the length of the lines while the engine is running, you should be able to hear the engine speed up if the starter fluid finds its way into a leak.
