super major fuel pump

Hi all
This is my first time to use the forum.
My 1961 Super is very hard on diesel and smokey, is it possible to adjust the amount of diesel it uses at the pump?
Its a pneumatic governer pump

Welcome to the board.

On your tractor it is not possible to vary the amount of fuel injected without the correct equipment. Each pump delivery valve has to be set independently and the output measured exactly at set revs. This is only possible on a specialist piece of equipment at a fuel pump specialist. Without this equipment it is possible to permanently damage the engine.

Have you checked the air cleaner as this can affect the running of the engine and give you the same sort of problems you describe?

Try taking the intake pipe off at the manifold and see if that makes a difference BUT BE CAREFUL as the engine can over-rev without this pipe fitted but it will give you a good idea if your problem is in the air supply.

Further to Brian's response, you need to isolate the problems that can cause excess fuel usage, although you may well end up having your injectors checked and overhauled by a Diesel Fuel Specialist with the correct test and set up rigs and possibly having your Fuel Injection Pump (FIP) tested, overhauled and recalibrated at the same place. Causes of excess fuel usage can be: FIP timing not set correctly, Low engine compression (usual suspects), Exhaust ports restricted from excessive idling, Air cleaner dirty (covered by Brian), Engine not running hot enough (unlikely), Faulty vacuum governor, Fuel Injector(s) worn/faulty, FIP not correctly calibrated for correct fuel delivery under load.

A process of elimination, good luck.

Possibly just the cold start button not returning ?
