Super Major final drive ratio

Post by anglo4 »

I'm trying to check whether my 1961 Super Major has the standard or optional ratio. I recall that the latter had letters stamped somewhere on top of the transmission housing? Help appreciated !!

Hi, I think there is a picture on here somewhere - I seem to recall that is is stamped on where the top cover sits so if you lift the hydraulic cover it's where the gasket sits - failing that it's scribed in to the differential , either way - its not easily visible unless you lift off the hydraulic cover - best of luck

There were no ratio changes until 1963 so a 1961 is a standard 3.3 ratio.

Seems I've found the answer in that up until the NPSM, the final drive was the standard high road speed . Presumably at ,say, 1900rpm it should travel at about 18mph or there abouts ?? I'm planning a longish trip and every mph counts! Any ideas apart from ear protectors !

Hi,

my 1963 Super Major runs about 20 kmh (not mph) at 2000 rpm in sixth gear. Is there a possibility to speed her up?
Higher revs is not my favorite solution ...

18 mph is fast for a Super. Normally you are looking at around 14 - 15 mph with the standard ratio.

Can you find some 3metre diameter rear wheels / tyres to fit Peter ?? :P but this would spoil the look

More seriously, many tractor dragging enthusiasts in the UK use Major rear ends, I don't know if they vary the transmission ratio but it might be worthwhile looking for a forum for this sport as they may know about alternative gearing possibilities.

hello

if you want to know for sure, you have the slow or the fast dif
you have to check the amount of teeth of your pinion wheel

if you unscrew your main gear lever , and lift 1 a rear wheel of the ground , and rotate it, i think you can count the amount of teeth of the pinion wheel

with other words 8 teeth on the pinion is the slow diff , and 10 teeth is the fast diff

I was thinking of 18.4/30 when renewing tyres, but they are not mentioned in any papers I had.
In Germany you need a technical check from TÜV for registration. With old papers it was no problem to get that, 16.4/30 was in the owners manual, 18.4/30 is not. So I had the risk of buying tyres I'm not allowed to use. And 18.4/30 are not original. But they look great ...

18.4/30 is about 10% more circumference than 16.4/30. It gives 22kmh at 2000rpm insted of 20kmh now.

Hallo Peter,
16,4x30 is not existing. You mean 16,9x30?

A couple weeks ago I saw a 6 Zylinder Major on 18,4x 34, it looked great.
