Hi Marc
Looks like a transmission brake leaf plate has broken up. This happens when the tractor is driven with the brake left on. You need to remove the primary gearbox - see photo below.

Hi Marc
This is what the broken part looks like (see first link). It's available through lots of parts retailers. It interleaves with wear plates (see second link).

Hi Marc
I have just checked my photos to see if I encountered any wear on this gear. As you can see below, there isn't any wear, so it doesn't appear to be a fault that is common to all Major gearboxes. I'm scratching my head as to how this would occur. I wonder if other members would know. I notice your tractor is fitted with a Howard reduction box. I can't think how this might affect anything with regard to the worn gear teeth, but it might. Again others may be able to shed some light.
Once you have removed the primary gearbox you can get at the gears in question very easily. If you have a breakers yard in Holland that has any Majors, I would try to swap the worn gears.
Don't forget to replace the two seals whilst you have the gearbox apart (the seals that stop the gearbox oil from draining into the rear axle).

Hi Marc
It's one of these (see link below). They are an optional extra, designed to enable very slow ground speed when using certain PTO driven implements. As far as I'm aware, they don't have any seals in them. The seals you have to replace are both accessible now you have removed the gearbox from the rear axle. There are threads on this forum board detailing where the seals are and how to replace them.

I've got the same problem with mine. The previous owner has driven with the hand brake on. The bits of the plates that have broken off have gone through the PTO gear and broken the casting. Where's the best place to get the plates for my E1a. It needs new bearings aswell, are there any breakers yards in Staffordshire?
