hi, has anyone carried this out without removing the head?
I`m asking because in the fordson manual it says as long as piston is at tdc its do-able. how would i check that each piston would be at tdc? I realise both valves on the piston need to be closed. any tips will be great thanks, rich.

If you remove the injector and put a small screwdriver or rod down the port. Turn the engine over and the rod will rise. When it stops its at tdc. Then you can push the spring down to remove the collet on the valve and then the seal.

With the rocker gear removed you will have 2 pistons at a time on a compression stroke; and with a compression ratio of 15 to 1 it will take effort and time, on your part, to get the pistons to reach TDC. With your rod or screwdriver inserted don't even think about using the starter motor -- you will cause serious damage.
