Another question: Has anyone come across a blocked tube to the gauge? I thought the gauge u/s but tried another and then found that with the engine running there is not any oil pumping out at the gauge end. There does not appear to be an obvious kink or crimp.

Try taking the pipe off and fitting an airline to blow through the pipe mine had some gunge in and this cleared it nicely
