16.9 x 30 or 14.9 x 30

Post by witty73 »

Hi all,

when I purchased my new major, it had 18.4 x 30 rear tires on it. The previous owner had the rims widened, for the larger tires. I happened across a set of 30 inch rims for the major with 16.9 tires on them. the tires are cracked up, and that size isnt easy to come by. Has anybody tried fitting a 14.9 on the 15 wide rim?

This really is to bump your post up so it gets some attention. However, if the 30" rims are standard Fordson rims, the 14.9 should work just fine as I believe they were spec'd for majors in some manuals.

Hopefully someone with more knowledge will jump in with more definitive info.

When researching, I found a chart that shows rim width for various tires. The rim width for the 16.9 is supposed to be 15 inches wide, where the 14.9 requires a 13 inch wide rim. Im pretty sure I could a set of 14.9 tires to fit on the wider rim, I just thought I would ask to see if anybody has put them on already. Ultimately, wouldnt mind seeing some pictures with the 14.9's. This tractors hard pulling days are long behind it, and with my plans of using it as a yard tractor, I wouldnt mind the smaller rubber. Plus, decent used 14.9's are alot easier to come by versus the 16.9's.

If you want narrow wheels why not use the std. 12,4x36 ?

I am maybe being a smartarse but I am wondering if the title should be, '18.4 x 30 or 16.9 x 30' ? Has the OP confused himself a little in his original post?
Because if 14.9 x 30 tyres do exist, it certainly isn't a common size?

I have a Hymac digger here on 16.9 x 30's, and also a 'spare' 6-stud wheel for a JCB which I think is the same size, so I wouldn't have thought these were at all uncommon. I can't measure the rim width but the Hymac wheels are stamped, 'GKN Sankey, Made in England, 30 x 14L'

I have 16.9 x30 on two of my Super Majors. And the one is stamped "Enfo HD " . I believe it stands for English ford heavy duty.

Originally blackbob what I had meat was.....I was getting rid of my wide wheels and tires, and had found a set of wheels with 16.9 tires on them. The tires were tough looking, and I had found a used set of 14.9 x30 tires with good rubber and no cracks. I was curious out there if anybody had stretched a set of those on the original rear rims.
