Hi Edward, 1st of all you need to distinguish whether it's unburnt diesel or coolant, what does it smell like ie diesel or antifreeze? Does it still run smooth or rough? Does it use any coolant?

Re: Smokey Fordson
id say it's more unburnt diesel when the revs are high theres plenty of soot and shit coming out the top and if you put your hand over the exhaust it gets coverd in carbon pretty quickly, but its not oily just a dry carbon build up
ill check the injector link is tight next time iv got a day off

Re: Smokey Fordson
It could well be your coupling but presuming it's still got a fair amount of power whilst its running on fairly high revs you could crack one injector off at a time so it stops running on that cylinder for 10 seconds or so to see if it runs any differently or clearer on one more than the others, this could then lead you too look at a failed injector or a compression issue in a specific cylinder. Obviously stand clear of the diesel that will be spurted out under high pressure. If one doesn't stand out more than the others and you've not messed with the timing etc it's likely to be the pump coupling. Another avenue... I've known things - wrag, twigs go though the inlet valve and get jammed and leave them just off there seat and they loose compression.

Excess fuel button stuck in???
Re: Smokey Fordson
Make absolutely sure that water is not getting into the cylinders. Symptoms , grey oil and/or loss of coolant.
If that is not the problem hitch it up to the toughest implement you have and work it as hard as possible for at least 3 hours. I don't mean just pulling a trailer, try a plough or something else which moves the soil.

Re: Smokey Fordson
Have you checked the pump timing?

Earlier engines have the timing mark on the front pulley with an indicator on the dynamo mount. Marks on the pump still line up as per the first picture.

If it is out this could give you the symptoms you have.
Have you checked the oil level and condition of the air cleaner?
Now more important questions!
Are you in Victoria?
Where is "Big Lizzie" she looks like someone we should visit in November this year?

Many thanks for that, we shall be staying in the Mildura/Red Cliffs area in early November so that will go down on our "Must See" list.

Re: Smokey Fordson
Hi bought an old major last year she smoked like a train as soon as you revved it up hitched a large muck spreader to it and did a days spreading started off using high first with the revs fairly high so she was working hard with a cloud of black smoke pouring out and some soot and hot oil.... but after a fool days work she had stopped smoking almost altogether with no more soot or oil in the exhaust then gave her a full service and oil change the difference was unbelievable the old tractors really need some good hard work sometimes
