Injector pump rack keeps closing
Injector pump rack keeps closing
Oh god !! dose anything go easy ? my 1st attempt to restarting my rebuilt engine with the same Inj pump which was on it when I drove it in to the garage before the rebuild has now decided to close the rack and cutting off the fuel supply to the injectors as soon as I turn the engine over, I've swapped the vacuum pipes around but no difference. As soon a I wind the engine the rack in the pump closes, I'm not the most experienced mechanic I rebuilt a few engines before . Is it possible that I have the tappets so badly set that its causing this to happen ????. Ive never set the tappets on any thing before .Any ideas folks ? I'd love to hear it

Could the vacuum pipe be connected wrong.
Kind regards, Henk

No ive swapped them around but no difference .

That problem, or something very similar, was asked in 2012. You need to remove the pump cover, after properly cleaning it. Then inject/squirt oil such as ATF fluid onto the rack and push said rack backwards and forwards till the rack is free and the springs are able to do their job by themselves.

dont mind my rambling, air filter cleaned , just recheck all the main stuff ,
stop is pushed all the way in not stopping it starting
youve probley already done this, pump is probley ok if was working before
rebuild, how long from stoping engine for rebuild untill now the pump
wouldnt have been left compleaty dry , for to do damage,

Re: Injector pump rack keeps closing
Remove the air hose from the inlet and check the butterfly if it works well.
If it starts and runs well, it has not enough air.

Re: Injector pump rack keeps closing
Thanks lads , ive went through all them checks and i cant see anything obvious ,The butterfly is working ok so ill have to rule that out .Now the pump was off for 6 months and stored in a dry garage and the oil or what little oil there was had leaked ,seaped ,evaporated from the pump .so maybe ill do a little cleaning With a tooth brush and diesel and spray some WD40 and do as paval says. I have googled and you tubed the crap lol Out of setting tappets so im pretty sure they are correct. ive flattend the batterie now , So That's why I'm back in from the shed. Ive a hectic few days coming up so ill have to park my trouble shooting till the weekend . Thanks for the advice and ill keep ye all posted.

Re: Injector pump rack keeps closing
A dirty clogged air filter will cause a vacuum governed injection pump to try and cut the fuel off. Try running the ngine with out the air filter.

I had a similar problem and as a temporary cure held the stop lever on the pump open with an external spring. Not that strong that the stop control wouldn't work.
Not ideal but kept the tractor going until I had more time.

Re: Injector pump rack keeps closing
Is the stop cable not to short connected?
Kind regards, Henk

Re: Injector pump rack keeps closing
I have no stopper cable connected yet so that's not the issue . I also don't have the air breather conected yet and I know she should start with out it . But maybe its one of them vacuum pipes going back to the butterfly that might be blocked as that be the only obstruction of air to the pump ? Like I said wont be checking it now till the weekend , thanks lads for the input
Re: Injector pump rack keeps closing
I rather think that could be your problem -- lack of stop cable. Some years ago when I overhauled my Major I couldn't get it to run 'till I re-fitted the cable. I suggest that without a cable you take up Fenhayman's suggestion and fit a spring to ensure it stays open as they can have a tendency to creep -- even though you will have to get off to stop the engine.

Well it's the weekend so I hope to get some smoke from this new engine .I've cleaned and freed up the rack and will fit a light spring on the stopper as discussed and report back later on this weekend . Fingers crossed

But another issue has developed I have posted it up on this forum " rebuilt clutch but still won't work " and some good guys offering good advice . One thing at a time eh ?. But to those of you who helped me get my engine started thanks again . I must get some pictures up .
