steering box seal

Post by themajor60 »

Hi everyone.

So after all the issues i had with the oil leak which i have now cured, the tractor was basically finished but then another problem. The steering box shaft seal is now leaking!! I got it out and a new seal ordered but it is the wrong kind and can only find these ones to purchase. The one im after looks like a flat o ring with a steel ring that fits over that to retain it. Any ideas where to get one?

This is a problem.
I put a grease cord in mine and it helpt a while, but it still leaks a bit.
Kind regards, Henk

That sounds like a dowty washer to me very common in hydraulics and they are available in imperial and metric and readily available at all hydraulic specialist and agricultural dealers.

Hi Stu
I think he has the early steering box seal, its a 2 piece. The rubber part goes in then the washer is staked in place to hold it. I 'm not sure a dowty will work they aren't really meant for a moving seal like an O ring type deal or a proper lip seal. There more for static applications once the things tight. We use them on Belarus Hyd fittings if the factory copper washers won't seal some times.

I had the same problem with my 53, so I took the advice of "Spicklas" and had the box machined to accept the later model sleeve. No more leaks, and if they do, it can be repaired with a new seal.
