I am using 20.50w in engine,gearbox and back end what oil for steering box 1960 fm cheers darryl

The good book states SAE 90 -- which is what I use.

Finally I managed to take the steering wheel off, had to destroy it in the process but...it off!


So I began to strip it down, and once the oil was out and the shaft out, I started to see bad things...



Then I looked at the worm gear...this wear looks bad, what are other peoples thoughts?


Then in the assembly nut has a fair amount of wear.




Also the top bushing is worn...anyone know where I can get a knew one from??

Billy that is the worst worn steering box I have ever seen! Think you need to visit some breakers or e-bay.

I have one on a FSM that may look like that.......it snaps, crackles and pops when turning. Sounds quite arthritic.
Be a winters job though!

Well that's not what I wanted to hear! but oh well!

The strange this is the steering was lovely, I couldn't feel any grinding or anything, I was surprised it's this bad, she feel smooth when turning. I only stripped it down to replace the seal on the drop arm...

In a humorous mood I thought about getting the worm gear welded, then I thought maybe that could work...what's people's thoughts on that???

That was as bad a steering box as I've ever seen, considering it was full of oil!. I'd say it's beyond salvage

Its not in the 'good book' but you probably need 25% by volume of sawdust with the sae 90 until you find a replacement - was there much backlash in the steering ? if not it speaks volumes for the chap who designed it and the main reason for changing from worm and nut to recirculating ball boxes - happy hunting
