FPM back end hydraulics for log splitter

Hi all, wonder if anyone can teach me what I'm doing wrong here, my log splitter has a 1/2 pipe which appears to be the feed, which I connect onto a quick release spool valve be my seat, the log splitters return pipe is 3/4 inch, and at present this is just into back end filler.

Now I understand I have to hold the hydraulics handle up to power the log splitter? I see I can lock it up, but this is lifting the log splitter up? Is this right, I kinda need the tractor to be mounted onto splitter as its moved a lot.

Next problem is the ram comes out very slow, but returns super fast, it splits fine.

It'll do that Brendan, if you are a recent lottery winner you might just find an auxilliary valve somewhere to fit as well as the existing lift lever / valve and connect the QRC pipe to that instead. As Bob notes in the other thread, the Super Major back end had an inbuilt TPL / Auxilliary lift selector valve.

Failing this, safely lock or block the splitter up in the air as it only drops through gravity.

My view is that this is one of the very few serious operational aspects of the FM I've encountered and I guess due to other hydraulic gear not being so common during its anticipated working life and who then would have guessed just how long the average life would be !

As far as the speed difference is concerned this sounds OK, there is not a vast flow of fluid, on the ram out stroke you have to fill the entire volume of the ram casing to move the piston, on the return stroke only this volume minus the volume taken up by the ram itself so same volume of oil flow = slow and shure out, quick and dirty back :D

Sounds like you have it right Brendan, I put a 3" nail through the quadrant and lever, theres a hole there ready. The hydraulics stay on constant pumping and the splitter will be up on the arms all the time. I got fed up taking the splitter on / off the rear end and put it on the front end and its worked really well, just had to extend the pipes, Dave
