engine oil capacities and dipstick

Post by mathias1 »

Hi,

I'm busy getting new fluids in my FSM NP. I came up onto a really stupid issue.

I drained the engine oil and found only about 5liter including oil from the filter.
That seems a little far away from the normal 8 liter specification.
I checked the level on the dipstick before draining and that looked alright. So.., maybe my dipstick isn't the right one.
Could someone check the measurements of their dipstick?

Mine is as follow: 23.5cm full length
and about 4.5cm until full cold capacity

Sorry I forgot to look yesterday.. You are maybe right, my (older) engine's dipstick is only 18cm to the bottom of the collar, where yours is 23. The 4.5cm to the top of the 'Safe Driving Range' is the same

Looking at your photo, is that not a mark at 20cm? Is it possible the collar has moved up the dipstick, as mine looks longer at the top?

thanks for the info Bob,
the collar was sitting on the top, but it seems to be movable. Maybe I can fix it. Let me know how far the collar should be from the end, when you have a moment to look at it.

I think that's your problem then, someone has pushed the dipstick in too hard and pushed the collar up a bit? Here's a photo for you, but I suspect there should be a dot of weld holding the top of the collar, 20cm from the tip of the dipstick
