Split Power Major questions

Hi All,
I posted a while ago about my Power Major and was advised to split the tractor, and also to pull the PTO to inspect for lost reverse idler bolt. So now I'm in need of some info, please, to several questions so I'll list them to make it easy to respond to each of them (hopefully) :)

1. I'm on the US side of the pond and I want new seals and gaskets. Where can I shop for them? Do I need to make my own gaskets?
2. Do I have to pull the PTO from the back? My shop manual is poor at giving this info plus the raised PTO bolts are pretty rusted. I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this one but any advice would be appreciated.
3. My hydraulic lift lever leaks from the shaft end O-Ring. Is this something that I can also shop for or do I need to try to match it? It is an odd shaped O-ring. More like an O-Cylinder.

That's it for now. Thanks in advance for the help.

Phil

Here is a listing of Seals, O-Rings & Bearings that were posted here some time ago but I can't find the post:

Do a Google search for the part number and you may come up with several suppliers.

Folks, thanks for the pointers. I think it got me over the parts hurdle.
I'm heading out today to pull the pto (hopefully). I'm hoping its somewhat similar to my 8N. I removed the retainer clip from the front of the shaft but I really have no idea what to expect. I hope the box to raise the pto pops off somewhat easily. The darn tractor got no love for the 50 years it sat in the weather before I owned it. I'll try to change that. :)

Hello Phil
Greetings from a rather damp, grey Suffolk in England.
I've never got up close to a raised PTO, so I can't be much help other than to confirm that you do need to pull the PTO shaft out of the back end if you wish to split the tractor.
Below is a photo of the standard PTO shaft unbolted and withdrawn.
Re problems in the gearbox, the best first step is to remove the selector fork plate on the nearside of the gearbox housing. This enables you to have a good look inside the gearbox. If you decide to split the tractor and remove the gearbox, a major benefit of this operation is that you can replace the 50+ year old seals that maintain the different oil levels between gearbox and rear axle. I'd recommend you do this, if you can.
Good luck.
Best, Adrian.

Phil, tailor made gaskets are fairly pricey and I`m the original tight ass. I bought a 50 x 1m roll of lining paper from a DIY store and cut out new ones from that, it worked fine with a smear of grease to stick the new gaskets in place and cost a fraction of the ready made ones. My Power Major had 2 single lipped seals in the PTO gearbox which I replaced with one double lipped seal and it was a b----r to fit, if I ever have to do it again I think 2 single seals will fit in much easier one at a time. Phil -

The Raised PTO has no seal after the bearing on the shaft between the rear end and the housing. Put a bucket under it even if you drain the rear end.

Hey all,
Thanks for the help and ideas. Just what I needed.
Maybe someday I'll be able to return the favor.
