"Strange" engine number

Hi everyone!

I have been following your discussions and it is obvious that this is a good place to come up with a question!

A friend of mine have a fordson major ( diesel) from 1957 according to the plate on the "wall" in front of the battery.
But the engine number is different one and it does not look like any engine number i have seen on a fordson before;
The number starts with a "R" !? The full number is: R 58912

Do anyone have any idea about this? Is it an engine produced for other applications than tractors maybe?

The engine looks normal for the forsdon major in all ways except for the number. So this is not a problem at all, but I get quite curious!

Best regards Martin

Brian will confirm or otherwise but I think this may indicate a reconditioned engine has been fitted ?

Yes probably a reconditioned engine. But as far as I know the number starts with an "S" when it is after market engines. I might bee wrong of course, so I hope we can get some information from Brian

maybe you can post some pictures?
you can also check the castingcodes to verify the production date: http://www.selen.nu/cgi-bin/trnr.pl?lang=en

"S" is the industrial designation for new engines, "R" would indicate factory reconditioned by Ford.
