Head interchaneability on majors

Post by dwol »

I am working on my 61 super and thinking of changing out the head. Are the older/newer heads interchangeable for the major? I don't mind losing a few Hp if that is what it takes.
Kind regards,
Dave

Dave,

There were basically only three heads used on the Major series.

1. Mk 1 engine with staggered ports. Will fit but will need manifolds to match. Will also need a valve cover and modified air cleaner intake as the fume extraction went into the inlet manifold on the Mk 1 engine. Valve cover is retained by two bolts into valve rocker supports and you will need the valve rockers.

2. Mk 2 engines from 1957 to around 1962 all use the same head.

3. The FL head used from late 1962 to end of production. This has improved porting and internal improvements. Can be identified by the letters "FL" cast under No.1 injector.

All heads will fit all tractors. But I would stay away from the earlier Mk 1 heads.
