Fordson Super Major Engine Idling Problem

Post by amen423 »

I have a Fordson Super Major Tractor where the engine was reconditioned several years ago so the condition of the engine is pretty good and it has not done a lot of hard work since then.

The problem that I am having with it is that when I bring the throttle back to the idle position, the engine does not immediately return to idling and runs at a slightly increased rate.

Sometimes after a period of time, which is not consistent, it will return to idling and other times it will not.

Is there anyone who has had the same problem and how did you overcome it or is there anyone else who knows what the problem is and how do I fix it?

Welcome to the board.

Your problem is most possibly due to a sticking rack in the injection pump. Before rushing into replacing items, put a quart of Automatic Transmission Fluid in the diesel tank and work her hard for a few days. You may find all your problems disappear.

I'm going to try this on mine, Brian!

Won't do any harm and I can't think what else it could be. (High idle whatever I do) Put diaphragm in governor, and no help, messed with idle screws, etc.
