Uncontrollable high revs & black smoke

Post by AndyJB »

Hi-my Majortractor starts ok then goes immediately to max revs & pumps out black smoke from exhaust, only way to stop engine is to engage gear & brakes & stall it, any advice greatly appreciated, regards, Andy

I would say the rack is stuck in your injection pump, you need to take the plate off the side and have a look, the rack should move freely side-to-side when you pull the stopper, and also when you push in the excess-fuel button?

Another thing to look for, is a leak on one of pneumatic governor lines.. If a line is sucking air, it will cause tractor to run flat out. One of mine developed a crack, and did that.

Good luck!

Richard.

Thanks Richard, didn't have as much time as hoped today but, eventually, got the unit off and the end cover off. Wondered why the external throttle mechanism seemed to be functioning ok, now see it acts on a sprung arm which seems seized, got some weird coloured liquid out, leaving to fully drain overnight then will see if I can free things up tomorrow, older a a tiny bit wiser!, regards, Andy

Update, the injector pump seems seized with lots of rust/corrosion evident, with my v limited knowledge I've decided to take it to a specialist for sorting, should be ready for collection in a few days, hoped the bill isn't too big! Regards, Andy

Wen I first read this topic I thought it has to be the governor of pipe leak as has been suggested, this reminded me of a similar problem, that may be of interest.
Our 1955 New Major Macomb Moore Grader was purchased with an engine not going and a severely worn crank and big end, we replaced the engine and started it to find it producing huge quantities of white smoke we could not understand it.
we were well aware that a split governor diaphragm would make the revs out of control, but this did not account for the large amounts of white smoke.

After trying all else we checked the governor, to find that there was indeed a split diaphragm, but this did not account for the level of rev control we had.
After replacing the diaphragm we further found that some nasty person had closed the throttle butterfly so much that it was almost closed, and hence it was starving for air and creating an unburnt fuel situation and white smoke.

All fixed now.http://www.fordsontractorpages.nl/phpbb ... f=2&t=7277#
