How to clean fuel lift pump?

I'm going through fuel system trying to clean out what I believe happened from low fuel level. So far air oil bath & new fuel filter.
I have pressed the fuel lift pump lever 2-300 times & I'm not getting barely a dribble to the fuel filter canister. That makes me think the fuel lift pump is clogged. I turned the engine over a couple of times & got a better flow to filter canister. Now there seems to be no end to air bubbles @ the inlet side.

Anyone know the best way to clean this? THANKS.

If you are getting air bubbles in the suction side you could have an air leak. You could also have a blocked filter in the tank tap. You need to remove the tap from the bottom of the tank to check this. Be prepared for the new under arm deodorant, Diesel.

Have you tried taking the single bolt out of the centre of the lift pump and taking the cover off? That should give you an indication of the fuel flow. It will need to fill a pint container in about a couple of minutes.

There is little to clean in the fuel lift pump other than take the cover off and letting the gunge come out. Do you also have a pre-cleaner water trap before the pump itself? There will be a flat disc filter in that.

When operating the fuel lift pump, sometimes the engine stops with the pump on top of the cam. When this happens you can pump as hard as you like and you will get no diesel, turn the engine over half a turn and the lift pump will then work.

Thanks for the reply Brian. I don't have a pre-cleaner water trap. I did turn the engine over & bled out the lines. Tractor STILL blows white smoke & idles high. Speaking w/D&W Diesel (they rebuilt my pump ) I'm thinking it's time to replace injectors. Problem; it's probably a "protected" part & I have some research to do to find them on a low budget plan. I love this forum. Thank you. Russ
