replace waterpump?

Hi guys,

I have got the waterpump out of my 590e. The engine hasn't run for 30 years, so there's quite some rust.
The pump doesn't looks that good to me. I'm thinking of replacing it by a new one.
What do you think?

I would not buy a new pump in a hurry. You might need something else too for that engine. The pump can have two faults. The bearings are noisy and worn or the seal is leaking. How it looks does not matter mutch. If you buy a new I recomend a complete, because it is not mutch cheeper with the repairkit. The Major pump will fit.

The problem will be most likely bearing rusted and seal stuck to the shaft which will tear on the first turn. I would fit a new pump but would agree with Grani, wait until you know what else you need.

wrong idee lots of work to fit and at last I take it to my work and they got it for me.

Hi guys,

Is the waterpump for a 4 cylinder the same as the one for a 6 cylinder?

When I removed the waterpump, I noticed, that there's quite some rust on the inside of the engine.
Does anybody have an idea how to remove this? Probably take the engine apart?
Or maybe flushing the engine with some kind of fluid? But I don't think my new waterpump will enjoy the rust...

Don´t be surpriced about the rust. It is normal in those old engines and with the engine dry for 30 years it could not look better than that. The lower sleeve seal groves are the most sensitive spots for rust. Most of the dirt is in the other end of the engine. Just flush with water the dirt out.

Would hydroblasting be usefull (not point at the bushes, I guess), or would that harm the engine?
I guess that just flushing with water, won't get out the rust?

You don´t have to get all the rust and dirt out, just the loose one, so it don´t circulate in the whole system.
If Your intension is to overhaul the whole engine in a near future, then it is better to not try to start it first. But if You are going to use it as it is, then continue.

If you take the liners out you are going to have an empty block. That would be the time to clean it but as Grani says, the rust is no problem. Even if it is loose, it settles to the bottom of the block and just lies there.
