Major Diesel Hydraulic Problem

My 1956 major seems to have a problem with the hydraulic lift, it will lift a heavy load with no issues however it starts to drop again rather quickly which is quite a nuisance when doing any work with it. I assume there is a seal needing changed? Does the top cover need to be lifted off to get the seal changed? Michael

Could be a number of things. Easyes job to begin with is to remove the valve gear at the front of the rearend cover. Pull out the piston and check the oil seal. If it's ok than you have to dig deeper.
