I have been searching and cannot find the gasket that is between the hydraulic lift top and rear end. Is it ok to permatex or do I need to order some gasket material and make a gasket ?
Mine has a 62 engine but has the cream colored hood and fenders and blue frame and engine, and says Ford 5000 on the hood.

Hi,

I used Dirko HT http://www.elring.com/fileadmin/Dateiab ... 2-2017.pdf to seal the hydraulic top and even the the small block on top of the cover.

I would think that would be much easier and maybe cheaper than trying to find gasket material big enough to cut, if there isn't one available for a reasonable price.
Plus if I screw up, I have to scrap it !

I bought a roll of thick lining paper from a DIY shop, cut out the gasket shape and smeared both sides with grease and it worked so well I havn`t bought a gasket since - and I`ve still got 24 mtrs left! Dave

Forgive my ignorance but I don't understand what lining paper is. Can you explain more, so I might be able to find some ?

Lining paper is a plain type of wallpaper used to paste to walls or ceilings to hide cracks and imperfections before final decoration. It comes in different grades of thickness, I bought a roll of thicker stuff for about £6. Being a metre wide it can make big gaskets, I did the sump with it, and it makes dirt cheap drawing paper for the granddaughters as well. Never tried sticking it to a wall though. Dave

Dad (a time-served mechanic) used to make gaskets from cornflakes packets :D

Although, I reckon you would need an extra-large packet to make the gasket you need

If you go with lining paper smear the two metal sufaces with grease, it makes a good seal and sticks the gasket in place while you fit the lid on. Four dowels dropped into the top corners of the transmission make it easier to drop the lid square on first time, its a bit heavy to faf around with.
