crankshaft timing gear

Post by pars75 »

fordson diesel major 1964. is the crankshaft timing gear fitted on one long key way (same on as the bottom pulley). I
am unable to remove the crankshaft timing gear that's using a puller, any tips on this issue.

Dear pars75

I am a bit unsure of what you have, as a 1964 model tractor should be a New Performance Super Major, rather than a Fordson Diesel Major which is much earlier (1954 onwards to (I think) 1957).

If your engine is after 1953, then you should have one long crankshaft key, which secures both the pulley and the crankshaft timing gear. It is 3/16in x 3/8in x 2 and 17/32in according to the parts list. The gear can be a swine to get off, but it usually gives in to a decent puller. The proper tool is illustrated in the repair manual as Tool No AT Tr/NVMD 6306a. Don't damage the threads in the end of the crankshaft.

Some heat from a propane torch on the gear boss may help by expanding it slightly - the heat from the engine over the years gradually converts the oil film to a very effective glue. Put a bolt in the thread at the end of the crankshaft and push against that, drilling a small dimple in the bolt head helps stop the puller from skidding off.
Good luck:)

I posted the question about the crankshaft timing gear under the name of
Pars 75. Had to make a new account to get back into forum.
We have rebuilt the bottom of the engine, new crankshaft and main end bearings,
And big end bearings.
Went to fit the crankshaft timing gear on the crankshaft And it would only
Slide on so far. Found out that the new crankshaft as a small ridge on it.
Apparently the old crankshaft size was 2.0 ins but the new one where the
Timing gear fits on the crankshaft it’s 2.015 in.
But I can’t find anyone who supplies the crankshaft timing gear in that
Size.

The crankshaft gear is a very tight fit, however, that seems like a lot of interference. The Major repair manual doesn't say anything about it, but it could be that the earliest cast cranks were smaller (later ones are forged). Some pics would help. It's very possible that this is a mistake by the manufacturer, but I'm not at all sure about that.

Link above for crankshaft photo.
The dealer Who supplied the crankshaft did not know
About this issue.
Sparex who supplied the crankshaft to the dealer were not very
Helpful.
I have taken the crankshaft timing gear to a engineer to
Get it machined out to 2.015 in.

This link is a photo of a parts list for Fordson tractors in
Australia, showing two crankshafts, and crankshaft timing gear 2.015in.

It looks like the gear was changed, as was the crank; you should really have got the 2" crank, but the other one will do. I suspect the change was made when the pulleys were changed from wide to narrow. I think that's when they changed the cast one for the forged one.
